Lightleak repair

Common problem of the Zenit E is a lightleak cause by deteriating foam around the prism. Light enters through the eyepiece (Zenit B only) and through the window of the lightmeter (near the needle).
This foam can be easily replaced. The prism is held in place with only a few screws (2) so removing the prism and the focussing screen assembly (3 screws) and cutting new foam is a good thing to do.

The foam I used is commonly found in harddisk packaging. You just have to cut it according to the old foam. The foam in teh upper two shots seems to be okay... But is it?

No it is not okay. Note that some is missing and that it sticks to your fingers. Not good, this foam has had it. It needs to be replaced.

Even the foam under the pentaprism is gone, glue is still sticky. Which is good you can cut two small pieces and just stick them on.

I've removed all the old foam. It's very easy and replaced it with this stroke of foam. It used to protect some microchips and now it will protect film. The last photo shows the new foam in place. Don't worry if the new foam is under the screws of the Pentaprism and focusscreen assembly. It's easily cut trough by the screws. You can clearly see the 3 screws that hold the focussing screen assembly.
Make sure that there are no breaches or holes. Use a small screwdriver if nessecary to push the foam in. Also watch the rear, make sure that the foam fits in. The left and the rear are the two most common places for lightleaks.

Offcourse you don't have to cut your own foam. In fact there is precut foam for you Zenit. Read my review on Jon Goodmans sealingkit for Lightleaks. Which save you a lot of problems in searching for the right foam.
