Zenit-E, Upgrade Project

Ongoing projects

Project 1

Repairing the lightmeter,

The Lightmeter is the main problem of the Zenit-E. The lightmeter is actually quite simple. It's just a Selenium cell coupled to a meter (left shot) with a resistor in between The rest is just the mechanical calculator ring. Unfortunatly the Selenium cell has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. And it will fail after that, it's just a matter of time.

What is a Selenium cell? (circled red in the right picture) It's just a photovoltaic cell. Its changes light into a voltage. So logicly we can use a solarcel from a calculator or similar. Only the resistor has to be changed. The meter does not have any problems as far as I know.

Project status
Built and tested, works great.

Info on this is in the Zenit Repair guide.

Project 2

Replacing the Groundglass to improve the viewfinder and focussing.
Project status
Built and tested, works great.

Info on this is in the Zenit Repair guide.

Project 3

Fixing the lightleaks
This happens due to old foam. The foam, just like the lightmeter is aging too and light comes in through the lightmeter window on the front through the metering window on the top (next to the calculator ring) and through the viewfinder.

Built and tested, works great.

Project 4

Changing the Zenit-E into a TTL SLR!

This is a serious step, the meter is there so why not put a solar cell in a place next to the prism?
Project status
Not yet built or tested. Finished first drawings of TTL schematics for the E type. Project has been abandoned.

This last project is the odd one out, for the time spent on this plus the materials would take more time then finding a Zenit TTL or Zenit 11 or 12, so I did :-) I bought myself a very nice Zenit-12.
